GoJ ICT Strategies
The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Strategies defines the technical direction and framework for the Government of Jamaica’s technology-based developments, services and risk management.
It is envisaged that these strategies will act as a guide for the development of National Strategies for the use and management of ICT by Ministries/Agencies and Departments providing seamless, efficient and cost effective services to the public sector and citizens of Jamaica
The ICT Strategy embodies the principles and priorities set within the E-Powering 2012 and Vision 2030
E-Powering Jamaica 2012 sets out a blueprint towards these desired outcomes. It is the result of extensive consultations and background research, including interviews with industry leaders, government executives, planners and industry analysts. It also benefits from benchmarking against ICT policies and strategies in nine other countries at varying stages of development, and an analysis of the approaches recommended in major multilateral organizations such as the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNECLAC), the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) and UNESCO.
Vision 2030 states:
“There can be no doubt that the development of the ICT sector has transformed life in Jamaica in many ways over the past two decades, a period which has seen the introduction and spread in use of mobile phones, personal computers and the Internet, dramatic expansion in the number and range of telecommunications and broadcast media providers, and growth of applications of ICTs in businesses, schools and households. The Vision 2030 Jamaica National Development Plan sees the ICT sector as playing a central role in the transformation of Jamaica over the next two decades on the path toward making the transition to becoming a developed country.”
ICT will no doubt remain a major area of essential investment in time, funds and management attention across Government of Jamaica. Computing power will continue to grow exponentially, generating a continued supply of new devices, software and uses, which will need to be investigated, evaluated and appropriately deployed.
