Projects
Current projects being undertaken by the Central Information Technology Office (CITO):
Microsoft Enterprise Agreement (MSEA) - Microsoft Products are widely used in the public sector, and for some time there had been concern regarding the extent of compliance with the proper licensing guidelines for the use of these products. Microsoft brought this fact to the attention of the then Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Technology in 1999. Ongoing negotiations culminated in the signing of a three (3) year Enterprise Agreement on June 23, 2004 by the Honourable Minister Phillip Paulwell on behalf of the Government of Jamaica. This agreement has been renewed for an additional three (3) years and will expire on June 30, 2010.
Free Open Source Software (FOSS) - This decision is in keeping with trends that have seen increasing momentum in the deployment of FOSS across various companies, municipalities and governments in the region and across the globe, particularly in emerging markets, such as Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela and Peru in South America; Malaysia and South Korea in Asia; and
Africa. FOSS is being increasingly embraced in these regions as a means to extend the reach of technology, and increase social and economic competitiveness.
